The first OMEGA Seamaster was unveiled in 1948 to celebrate the brand’s 100th anniversary, making it OMEGA’s oldest collection still in production. The Seamaster was lightly inspired by British military watches of the WW II era using an O-ring rubber gasket to keep the water out of the wristwatch. The early OMEGA Seamaster watches were more of the dress watch variety that could withstand some water exposure, but it wasn’t until 1957 when OMEGA launched a professional version called the Seamaster 300 that OMEGA’s diving watch was born. Today the OMEGA Seamaster collection still offers both professional watches built to explore the underwater world, in addition to dressier watches that are at home both on land and in sea.
OMEGA Seamaster Professional Watches
Among the OMEGA Seamaster collection are some watches that are built specifically for divers. In 2014, OMEGA revived the original 1957 Seamaster 300 diver’s watch with modern day enhancements. The new diving instrument is remarkably similar to the first with a clear and legible black dial, broadarrow hands, no crown guards, and a diver’s bezel, yet the size has been increased to 41mm and is equipped with the OMEGA Caliber 8400 fully anti-magnetic Master Co-Axial mechanical movement. For even more extreme diving watches, OMEGA offers the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M lineup and the Seamaster Ploprof 1200M collection, both equipped with a Helium Escape Valve (HEV) to prevent damage to the watch when diving to great depths.
OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra Watches
Still inspired by the marine life, the Seamaster Aqua Terra watches sport a dressier look than their diving watch counterparts and are instantaneously recognizable thanks to the “Teak Concept” dials with vertical lines reminiscent of wood decks on luxury boats. A wide range of styles and functions are available within the OMEGA Aqua Terra line, including the gent’s luxury sport watches, a ladies’ collection with options such as mother-of-pearl and diamonds, a golf inspired edition, and a James Bond watch.
OMEGA Seamaster Watches for James Bond
The OMEGA Seamaster gained even more popularity once it became part of the James Bond film franchise in 1995. Starting with Pierce Brosnan’s Bond wearing the Seamaster Diver 300M in GoldenEye up until the most recent Daniel Craig’s Bond wearing the Seamaster 300 in SPECTRE , the superspy is now never without his OMEGA watch.
The OMEGA Seamaster collection boasts an impressive selection of styles, waterproofness depths, added functions, sizes, materials, and so on for both men and women and the secondary market has them available at better prices. A used Seamaster 300, secondhand ladies’ Seamaster Aqua Terra, or pre-owned Ploprof 1200M can all be had for a fraction of the retail cost.
